WHAT WE ARE
Segara Nusa Nawasena

ABOUT

Segara Nusa Nawasena is a non-governmental organisation focusing on sustainable and inclusive ocean and coastal development in Indonesia.
The ocean covers two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. We are entirely reliant upon the ocean because it produces half the world’s oxygen, absorbs over a quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions, and captures 90 per cent of the excess heat from the Earth’s climate system.
The ocean provides livelihoods to close to 50 per cent of the world population and serves as a living, breathing cultural space for millions of people. In Indonesia the ocean is crucial for achieving food security, sustainable economic development, as well as supporting diverse marine ecosystems and ocean dependent communities.
Segara Nusa Nawasena aims to empower ocean dependent communities in Indonesia, especially small-scale fishers, women, and children, to implement innovative and practical solutions, and inform decisions and practices related to ocean conservation and its sustainable use.

EDUCATION
We are seeking to foster a future generation of ocean leaders by bringing exciting ocean education activities into classrooms and developing extracurricular activities for children and young people.
CAPACITY BUILDING
We are exploring capacity strengthening, particularly for small-scale fishers, women, and children, to protect the ocean and support the development of inclusive, equitable, and sustainable blue economies.
COMMUNITY RESILIENCE
We are advancing community resilience against climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution through awareness raising and conservation activities that are co-developed with local communities.
COVENING
We are bringing together ocean stakeholders at local, national and global levels to facilitate peer-to-peer learning, influence decisions, and shape practices of the present and future ocean conservation and management.
ART, HERITAGE, AND CULTURE
We are exploring the significance of art as well as coastal and marine cultural heritage in developing unique traditions, shaping the planet and human history, and fostering a sustainable stewardship of our marine environment.
